Astral Wolf

Description

I heard a story about a woman who had a frightening nighttime experience where she believed a spirit wolf was attached to her by a cord emerging from her chest.  I thought it would make a really interesting and freaky illustration, so this is a very loose interpretation of that story.

From what I recall, the story had a more modern setting, but everything is better when it's Victorian horror, right?

Thanks to Rachel over at Valentine-FOV-Stock for the great Victorian nightgown reference shots.  They were integral in capturing the mood and era I was going for.  She doesn't seem to be active here any more, but she's got some good reference photos there so check out her stuff.

Wow, this is utterly gorgeous! Reminds me of a short story by the great Victorian/Edwardian writer Algernon Blackwood.  The story in question is named "Camp of the Dog" and has a similar theme and an interesting twist on the werewolf legend (but sadly it's not one of his best tales).

The general premise of that tale is that out in nature (also called 'the primitive life'), far away from civilization  "A readjustment of the personal forces (personality) takes place quickly; some parts of the personality go to sleep, others wake up: but the first sweeping change that the primitive life brings about is that the artificial portions of the character shed themselves one after another like dead skins. Attitudes and poses that seemed genuine in the city drop away. The mind, like the body, grows quickly hard, simple, uncomplex. And in a camp as primitive and close to nature as ours was, these effects became speedily visible."

Things get decidedly trippier from thereon out.
